IMO CLOSER TO A NEW POLAR CODE

After intense negotiations , the IMO Sub-Committee on Ship Design and construction has prepared a draft Polar Code . The code is a special set of rules that ships must meet if they are sailing in polar waters. Several parts of the Polar Code and related consequential amendments to SOLAS and MARPOL will now be discussed in other IMO Sub- Committees and Committees . For example, the training component is to be discussed in Education Sub-Committee ( HTW ) , and marine environmental rules are on the agenda of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC ) before the Polar Code should be adopted by the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 94) in November 2014. At a meeting of the committee last week, Denmark stressed focus on improving safety in the Arctic , particularly in Greenland waters. Among other things, Denmark gave a taste of the potential of the newly developed ArcticWeb . ArcticWeb is an operational web service that collects and presents maritime information that is relevant for navigation in the Arctic, and allows ships to coordinate sailing, perform risk assessment and detailed information about including ice, weather and navigational warnings . The presentation was well attended and received positive feedback from both industry and governments. Other particularly interesting topics at the meeting were: The use of plastic pipes on ships The wind and offshore vessels Location of the gas tanks of LNG carriers Testing the watertight subdivisions in ships Stability Source: The Danish Maritime Authority / Maritime Denmark
