Paris Mou Campaign Reveals Extensive Fire-Safety Failings

Many ships do not have adequate fire-safety systems on board according to the findings of a concentrated inspection campaign (CIC) by the Paris MOU port-state control (PSC) authority. Over a three-month period, PSC inspectors uncovered 103 ships with deficiencies related to fire –safety systems. The campaign involved 4,014 inspections of 3,985 ships. Most problems were found with fire pumps and pipes, firefighting equipment and appliances and the fire-control plan. More than half the ships detained with fire-system problems were general cargo and multipurpose (MPP) vessels.
